Dia de los Muertos

Atlanta’s historic Oakland Cemetery held its annual Day of the Dead festival today. Hosted by the Consulate General of Mexico and the Institute of Mexican Culture, the event featured live music, food stalls, art vendors, and commemorative shrines. People of all ages, from little children to older folks, were dressed for the occasion with fancy attire, face paint, and flowered headbands. And there were crowds of people everywhere.

This particular cemetery is never a somber place. It was designed as something of a public park, and even now people go there to walk their dogs or take a stroll or just read a book on a blanket. However, today it was particularly fun to see the property full of people laughing, kids running around, and families generally celebrating life and family heritage. It was so cool!

Most of the shrines were dedicated to people who had died at the hands of ICE – here’s one of them
